Week #29 Elk Bull, Cow, and Calf

Week #29 Elk Bull, Cow, Calf

Bull in velvet is keeping an elk cow from her calf. The mother’s response is aggressive as she tries to protect her baby. Thirty days after birthing elk cows come back into estrus( defined as “in-heat”: a recurring period of sexual receptivity and fertility in many female mammals; heat). This bull is keeping her calf from getting near her because of his interest in breeding with her. It appears to me that she is not quite at the point of being in estrus and is therefor not ready. I like to see her being protective over her young.
