As a follow-up to lasts week “Friend or Foe?” entry, we have found that this was not a funny encounter as we first presumed it was, but we have learned that this buck is indeed a FOE!!! Biologists are finding that many herbivores are actually opportunists ans animals such as deer, cows, and horses have been seen eating eggs, small birds, and carrion. This may seem bizarre but it makes sense nutritionally. Possible explanations for this behavior may include: bucks growing antlers each year, pregnant does, needed minerals and fat in diet, lack of herbaceous material in the winter months, withstanding cold weather, and it could be that future studies may show that herbivores diets may vary more than we had previously assumed.
