The Redshoulder hawk (Buteo lineatus), is a common bird seen in the Little Lake Valley. This photo was captured by Marisela De Santa Anna while she observed this hawk and a number of other birds preying on crayfish that were surfaced in the nearby stream channel. Red-shouldered hawks can be seen soaring and circling with wings and tails spread out, or flapping wings quickly when navigating close to forest canopies. They hunt from perches and sit silently until they sight their prey below at which time they will descend swiftly and attempt to snatch the prey.
