Western gray squirrels are scatter hoarders, which means they have many smaller caches of acorns and nuts spread out in an area. A good memory is needed to recall where multiple stashes are located. Scatter-hoarding is important for seed dispersal and helps to spread plant populations. Uneaten seeds are given a chance to germinate and thrive.
